TD Ameritrade releases monthly Investor Movement Index for September — Retail investors decreased exposure to equity markets during September:

The Investor Movement Index (IMXSM) measured at 4.51 in September, down slightly from its August score. The IMX is TD Ameritrade”s proprietary, behavior-based index, aggregating Main Street investor positions and activity to measure what investors actually were doing and how they were positioned in the markets.

    • The reading for the four-week period ending Sept. 27, 2019 fell by 2 percent, continuing an 11-month trend of below-average IMX scores. Compared to historic averages, this score ranks “Moderately Low”.

    • Equity markets were mixed during September, with the S&P 500 moving higher by 1.2 percent and the Dow Jones Industrial Average increasing by 1.6 percent. The Nasdaq Composite ended the period slightly lower, down 0.3 percent, as the technology sector lagged. Oil prices were volatile following an attack on a Saudi oil facility, posting the biggest one-day gain in more than a decade. The Federal Reserve also voted to cut its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points for the second time in two months.

TD Ameritrade Earnings Preview- New Fee Landscape, CEO Search tops investor”s interest:

Ameritrade (AMTD) is set to report Q4 earnings tonight after the close with a conference call to follow tomorrow morning at 8:30am ET.

Current S&P Capital IQ consensus stands at EPS of $0.96 on revenue of $1.47 bln.

    The Story:

Shares of AMTD came under heavy selling pressure when the discount brokers started the latest battle on trade commissions. On September 30, Charles Schwab (SCHW) announced it would no longer charge clients for equity trades. This led discount broker peers to follow suit. AMTD shares were in particular focus as fees were the largest percentage of revenues among peers. The news led to a slew of downgrades and price cuts among analysts. AMTD is also hurt by the fact that it does not have a permanent CEO in place at a time when direction is needed.

AMTD made its zero fee announcement a few days later. AMTD stated that the decision would impact revenues by approx $220-240 mln (15-16%) per quarter. AMTD said it would have more information about the longer term impact on its Q4 call. In addition, investors will be curious to see if AMTD announces cost cutting measures and/or divestitures in order to offset the revenue decline.

Shares of AMTD tumbled 33% in reaction to the fee news, dropping from $48 to the $32 area. The stock has been able to bounce back approx 15% as it tests the gap down resistance level at $38. One of the reasons behind the bounce is speculation that AMTD”s assets are attractive at these levels. Analysts have speculated that this could lead to M&A interest. While the speculation is likely to continue, the key for shares will be earnings and comments from management on how this new business model will impact its strategic direction. If AMTD falters on either front then the $38 resistance level will remain in place.

    Q3 Recap:

Reported Q3 (Jun) earnings of $1.04 per share, excluding non-recurring items, $0.07 better than the S&P Capital IQ Consensus of $0.97. Revenues rose 7.9% year/year to $1.49 bln vs the $1.47 bln S&P Capital IQ Consensus:

Pre-tax GAAP income of $743 million, or 50 percent of net revenues

Net new client assets of approximately $19.5 billion, an annualized growth rate of 6 percent

Average client trades per day of ~825,000, up 5 percent year over year.

    Revenue Breakdown:

Commission and Transaction Fees $477 mln (down 1% yr/yr)

    Total asset-based revenues $955 mln (up 8% yr/yr)

    Other $59 mln

CEO Tim Hockey also stepped down. The Board said it would begin a search for his successor. Hockey agreed to stay on until February 2020. Given the changing competitive landscape, it will be paramount for AMTD to find a CEO to lead it through the next phase of the discount broker industry.
