After the war, the Articles of Confederation established a weak central government, which was eventually replaced by the United States Constitution in 1787. The Constitution established a strong central government with a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances, designed to prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. The importance of the United States Federal Government lies in its role in governing the nation and promoting the general welfare of its citizens. The Federal Government is responsible for a wide range of functions, including national defense, law enforcement, public health, environmental protection, and social welfare programs.
